Go on a real journey through time: from the Pre-Greek Peucetian civilization to that of our times, in one of the largest archaeological areas in Europe.
With the excursion “The path of water and stone” you will not only have the opportunity to keep fit, but also to discover the history of our magnificent rocky habitat along the Canapro torrent.
The tour will begin with a visit to the church ofSanta Maria degli Angeli, a typical example of rupestrian architecture of Greek Orthodox rite, carved into the steep part of the Gravina, probably built between 700 and 800 but discovered only in the 50s of last century following the renovation of Via Fontana la Stella. You have to know that this church was originally known as Santa Maria delle Tombe, because of the tombs present both inside and outside the church. This is also the only rock church that has preserved, in the nave, the altar used during liturgical functions for the distribution of the Eucharist, called “ara”.
From here, you will walk along theAqueduct BridgeFrom here, you will walk along the church, situated on the ravine of the stream, joining the new town to the old one, several times protagonist of important film sets, such as in 2020 for the 007 movie “No Time to Die “., “Tolo Tolo” by Checco Zalone, “Pinocchio” by Garrone, “The Last Paradise” by Scamarcio, “Captain Maria”, “Maria Magdalena” and others.
Connected to the Ponte Acquedotto, thanks to the last remaining tower of the sixteenth-century walls, there is the so called“Medieval Bastionwhich represented not only a means of defense, but also a meeting place for many Gravinesi given the possibility of getting water and maybe exchange a few words. You have to know, in fact, that the bastions were defensive elements built around the 15th century and had the purpose of protecting the “cortine”, that is the stretches of straight walls most exposed to enemy attacks. Crossing the Bastion you can enjoy the suggestive view of the archaeological area of Petramagna and the countless caves that characterize the landscape of the opposite side of the Canyon.
From here, you will proceed until you reach the necropolis of theEternal Father, the first archaeological area excavated by researchers, which takes its name from the Padre Eterno church next to which it stands. In addition to being a necropolis, the Padre Eterno area was also an inhabited area, and it is likely that there was a craft district there, given the discovery of cisterns, culverts, aqueducts, loom weights, and kilns.
Then continue to the archaeological settlement ofBotromagno(Peucetian city), where the oldest nucleus of the civilization of Gravina originated when the inhabitants who lived in the caves of the ravine moved to the Petra Magna hill and of which you can now admire very little of history, as an earthquake in the second century BC, razed everything to the ground;
Finally, you will conclude your experience by visiting theComplex of the 7 roomsFinally, you will conclude your experience by visiting the Petra Magna, one of the most evocative archaeological sites, rich in the history of the entire rocky civilization of the Apulian-Lucanian region, characterized by seven intercommunicating environments, hence the name, dug entirely on three levels in the rocky bank.
