Between one story and another, there is relaxation!
The tour will begin with a visit to the church ofSanta Maria degli Angeli, a typical example of rupestrian architecture of Greek Orthodox rite, carved into the steep part of the Gravina, probably built between 700 and 800 but discovered only in the 50s of last century following the renovation of Via Fontana la Stella. You have to know that this church was originally known as Santa Maria delle Tombe, because of the tombs present both inside and outside the church. This is also the only rock church that has preserved, in the nave, the altar used during liturgical functions for the distribution of the Eucharist, called “ara”.
From here, you will walk along theAqueduct BridgeFrom here, you will walk along the church, situated on the ravine of the stream, joining the new town to the old one, several times protagonist of important film sets, such as in 2020 for the 007 movie “No Time to Die “., “Tolo Tolo” by Checco Zalone, “Pinocchio” by Garrone, “The Last Paradise” by Scamarcio, “Captain Maria”, “Maria Magdalena” and others.
Connected to the Ponte Acquedotto, thanks to the last remaining tower of the sixteenth-century walls, there is the so called“Medieval Bastionwhich represented not only a means of defense, but also a meeting place for many Gravinesi given the possibility of getting water and maybe exchange a few words. You have to know, in fact, that the bastions were defensive elements built around the 15th century and had the purpose of protecting the “cortine”, that is the stretches of straight walls most exposed to enemy attacks. Crossing the Bastion you can enjoy the suggestive view of the archaeological area of Petramagna and of the countless caves that characterize the landscape of the opposite side of the Canyon.
Under the town of Gravina, in fact, is preserved an underground world made of tunnels dug into the rock, cellars, cisterns, rock churches, etc..The Cellars of San Marco CavatoThese structures are arranged on three levels, dug underground in the tuffaceous rock and are an important testimony of the rock civilization that from the Neolithic period has come down to us today.
Continue with a visit to the authentic church ofSanta Sofia, built in 1500 in the heart of the Rione dei Greci, inside which you can admire its works that will leave you speechless, such as the sixteenth-century painting called “The Holy Family”, and its greatest masterpiece: the funeral mausoleum that contains the remains of Duchess Angela Castriota Scanderbeg, wife of Ferdinand Orsini of Aragon, the sixth Duke of Gravina. Leaning against the church of Santa Sofia, you will not fail to notice the ancient and majestic monastery of the Poor Clares dedicated to Santa Maria Scala Coeli, whose abbesses included Fulvia Orsini, one of the sisters of Gravina’s Pope Benedict XIII.
The last stop on the cultural part of the tour includes a visit to theCrypt of San Vito Vecchiowhich, with its frescoes, will allow you to experience a total immersion in history. The first figure that will capture your attention, on the back wall, is the great Christ Pantocrator seated on a throne, who blesses with his right hand and with his left hand holds a “Book” open on a passage from the Gospel of St. John.
At the end of the tour you will enjoy a “Prince’s Path” at our wellness center Principe Relais that will make you benefit of: Salt Cave, Turkish bath (45 ° chromotherapy and aromatherapy), emotional shower, Sauna, Jacuzzi with cervical waterfall, relaxation area with herbal tea and fruit tasting.
