The tour will start with the visit of the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, located on the rocky area, typical example of rocky architecture of Greek Orthodox rite, carved into the steep part of the Gravina, probably built between 700 and 800 but discovered only in the 50s of last century following the renovation of Via Fontana la Stella. You have to know that this church was originally known as Santa Maria delle Tombe, because of the tombs present both inside and outside the church. This is also the only rock church to have preserved, in the nave, the altar used during liturgical services for the distribution of the Eucharist, called “ara”.
In front of the Church, you will visit the Medieval Bastion, a defensive element built around the 15th century and aimed at protecting the “cortine”, i.e. the straight stretches of wall most exposed to enemy attacks.Crossing the Bastion you will enjoy the suggestive view of the archaeological area of Petramagna and of the countless caves that characterize the landscape of the opposite side of the Canyon.
Thanks to the last remaining tower of the sixteenth-century walls, the Bastion is connected to the Ponte Acquedotto, located on the ravine of the stream, at the junction of the new city to the old one, several times the protagonist of important film sets, such as in 2020 for the 007 movie “No Time to Die “, “Tolo Tolo” by Checco Zalone, “Pinocchio” by Garrone, “The Last Paradise” by Scamarcio, “Captain Maria”, “Maria Magdalena” and others.
Walking along the ancient city walls and along the viaduct bridge of 700, you will reach the Rock Church of Our Lady of the Star, originally used as a place of pre-Christian worship, as evidenced by the figures of animals carved on the walls.considered miraculous, became a destination for many sick pilgrims, who asked the grace of healing, and infertile women who asked the grace to realize the dream of motherhood. Initially, Bishop Bosio decided to keep the sanctuary open one day and one night, once a year, for prayers. In 1693, however, Monsignor Cavalieri ordered its closure at night because, according to legend, the grace of motherhood was attributable to the orgiastic rites that were practiced here, with a nocturnal revelry of sounds and rhythmic songs vulgarly profaning the sanctuary.
From here, you will proceed until you reach the Necropolis of the Eternal Father, the first archaeological area excavated by researchers, which takes its name from the Eternal Father church next to which it stands. In addition to being a necropolis, the Eternal Father area was also an inhabited area and it is likely that there was an artisan district given the discovery of cisterns, canalizations, aqueducts, loom weights and furnaces.
Walking along the archaeological area of Padre Eterno, on the slopes of the hill of Botromagno, close to the stream, there is the naturalistic area of Capotenda, one of the less known but among the most fascinating and uncontaminated areas of the ravine of Gravina in Puglia.
Characterized by two parts, a wider and flatter one, close to the Gravina torrent, and a narrower and steeper one, with spectacular rocks that hold water tanks, where until a few decades ago the people of Gravina used to bathe in the summer season. Also noteworthy is the presence of a high cliff in the rocks, where the imperial crow nests in May, when it is easier to see these birds gliding over the area. The place-name Capotenda probably recalls an area where people used to camp, as a transit station, since Gravina has always been an important area along the historical routes, for example the Roman Appian Way.
